SPORTS ARTICLE OF THE WEEK:

10 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Watch the Pro Bowl

Wednesday, February 8, 2006

By Tom of Online Sports Trivia

The Pro Bowl is a collection of the best NFL superstars in both the NFC and the AFC, yet year after year it continues to disappoint, so much so that ABC doesn't even want to broadcast it anymore.  This week I'll take a look at why this great game is so meaningless, and why the fans frankly don't care.

10.  The game is in Hawaii.  Yes, this may be great for the people of Hawaii, and the fans who can afford to make the trip to Hawaii, but your typical fan is not able to travel to Hawaii to watch a football game for a weekend.  If the game was rotated around the country, such as the Super Bowl, more fans could actually attend the game, and more interest would be generated.

9.  Players don't want to play in the game.  Year after year you see players pulling out of the Pro Bowl because they don't want to tweak an injury, which basically means they don't want to play in the game.  If the player's don't want to play, then why should the fans want to watch?

8.  The fans make the voting a popularity contest, rather than picking the best players.  Granted, they only have 1/3 of the vote, but only the coaches and players should have a vote if you truly want the best players in the game.

7.  The media does not care.  If you watch any sports station the week before the Pro Bowl, you are almost certain to see more coverage of events surrounding the Pro Bowl, such as the skills competition, or celebrity golf tournament, rather than coverage of the actual game.  There must be some hype created by the media if anyone is going to watch the game.

6.  The players aren't in shape for the game.  Most NFL players, except for those on the two teams in the Super Bowl, have had one or more weeks of rest since the season ended.  Granted they need some time to rest, but if their doesn't make the playoffs, then you are looking at a month of the player just sitting around, letting his body get out of shape, and not ready to play in the Pro Bowl.

5.  The refs.  After this year's pathetic job of reffing by the NFL referees, the fans can't even be sure if the refs can make the right calls in the Pro Bowl.

4.  6 PM Eastern Time is an odd start time.  With the time difference in Hawaii, the game kicks off at 1 PM local time, which turns out to be 6 PM Eastern Time, which is an awkward start time, and leads to bad ratings.

3.  There is no defense.  The teams get virtually no time to practice together, which may be alright for the offenses, as they can put in simple pass routes, but for the defense, this may mean learning a new system within a week.

2.  The coaching staffs are biased.  It's often the case that the coaches of each league end up with several of their players on the team, and those players almost always end up playing significantly more than the other players, even when those other players are better.

1.  The rule changes.  The NFL tries to make the game better by changing the rules, such as no blitzing, no trying to block a kick, no stunting on defense, basically all of which hurt the defenses.  They want a flag football game with full pads in essence.  At this point, I think the NFL should actually try out a flag football game instead of the Pro Bowl, as it would be more interesting, and a lot more entertaing to watch for the fans.
