SPORTS ARTICLES OF THE WEEK ARCHIVE:
FEBRUARY 2, 2005
In last week's article, I discussed the Super
Bowl in general, and made my picks for the game. In this week's article,
I will go in depth, providing a position by position analysis, and much
more detailed predictions. Well anyways, here it goes:
Quarterback
Tom Brady vs. Donavon McNabb
I think this is a very close matchup. Donavon McNabb is the better
quarterback with his raw skills, yet he has never played in the Super
Bowl before. Tom Brady lacks some skills, but he has proven time after
time, that he is very clutch in key situations, especially the playoffs.
Its basically a coin flip in my opinion, but I would have to give the
edge to Donavon McNabb, just
because of his raw skills, and I think Brady will feel some pressure
from the tough Philly Defense.
Running Back
Correy Dillon vs. Brian Westbrook/Dorsey Levens
Although the Westbrook/Levens combination has proven to be powerful
during the first couple of playoff games, I think they will stand no
chance against the New England defense, with their amazing linebackers.
Correy Dilllon has also proven to be a major acquisition to the
Patriots, becoming a key part of the offense in only his first season. I
think there is no question, Dillon
is the better running back in this game.
Wide Receivers
Patten/Brown and NE Wide Receivers vs. Owens/Mitchell and Philly Wide
Receivers
Neither team has truly great wide receivers in this game, but both have
a star or two. On New England, David Patten is probably one of the
better wide receivers, yet besides him, there is not much talent. For
the Eagles, they do have Terrell Owens, but there are still questions
about his health for the game. I have to say that the Wide Receivers are
a toss up.
Offensive Line and the Rest of The
Offense
New England vs. Philadelphia
I think a good portion of this game will come down to the play of the
big guys for both teams. The two teams are known for their defenses, not
their offenses, so I think blocking will be essential to winning. Which
ever team can stop the rush, will be able to control the ball, and
eventually win the game. The offensive lines are pretty similar, so once
again, this is a toss up.
Defensive Line and Linebackers
New England vs. Philadelphia
These defensive lineman, and linebackers will really control the game in
my opinion. Both teams are known for their defenses, and this game will
be a defensive game. The Patriots have probably the best Linebackers in
the NFL, including Teddy Bruschi, as the leader of the defense. The
Eagles made several key off season pick ups to improve their defense,
including signing all pro Jevon Kearse to anchor the defensive line.
Kearse has proven to be an excellent player, showing his talent in the
Atlanta game especially. I think in the end, the Patriots defense will
prevail, and that is why I give the
Patriots the edge in this category.
Secondary
New England vs. Philadelphia
There is absolutely no question in this category. The Eagles, with the
exception of Brian Dawkins, have an awful secondary.
The Patriots have one of the best
in the NFL, and that is why they clearly win the battle of the
secondaries.
Conclusion
This Super Bowl looks like it could be a good one. The Patriots have the
better team, but you just get the sense that the Eagles really want this
one. In order for the Eagles to have a chance though, Donavon McNabb
will have to have an exceptional game. He is the only strength on the
Eagles, and he must take advantage of it. I predict the defenses will
prevail in this game, and it will be a relatively low scoring game. I
think the final score will be New England: 24 - Philadelphia 14, but it
will be a much closer game, for the majority of the game. Have a good,
safe, Super Bowl, and until next week,
Tom
