SPORTS ARTICLES OF THE WEEK ARCHIVE:
FEBRUARY 26, 2005
With the International Olympic Committee's (IOC)
upcoming decision in June, about the location of the 2012 Olympics, I
have decided to analyze New York City's bid for the 2012 Olympics. When
you really look at it, it all basically comes down to a proposed stadium
on the West Side. The property, which is currently owned by the MTA, is
being sold, and one of the very interested buyers, is the New York Jets.
However, there are also two other parties interested, Cablevision (which
owns Madison Square Garden) , and TransGas. It seems pretty logical that
the Jets would win the bid so that they could build a new stadium, and
NYC could get the Olympics, however, it is a lot more complicated than
that. The first issue, is cost. The Jets are only offering to pay $100
million dollars, whereas Cablevision is offering $600 million dollars,
and TransGas is offering $700 million dollars.
The other really important issue in this debate over the land, is what
the citizens of New York City want. The various polls vary in what the
people want, but it seems like it is about 50/50. Mayor Michael
Bloomberg is pushing very hard for this new West Side Stadium, but a lot
of residents, and local leaders, are saying that they don't want the
stadium, and don't want to use tax dollars to pay for it. Ultimately,
the decision is going to come down to the MTA, but I don't think this is
over yet. I would expect at least one more major bid, if not several.
TransGas doesn't have much of a chance at winning in my opinion, even
though they are offering the most money. I also think Cablevision is
making a mistake by bidding $600 million dollars, because their real
rival should be the New Jersey Nets moving to Brooklyn, with another NBA
team, not the fact that a football team is moving to Manhattan.
Personally, I support the Jets and New York City's bid for the Olympics.
I don't think two NFL teams (the Jets, and the New York Giants) should
have to share a stadium. This is a perfect location for the Jets, and it
will allow them to have their own stadium, and also allow them to move
back to New York, instead of playing in New Jersey. While I don't think
the Olympics are a great idea, I think if the West Side Stadium is
built, then they will probably come to NYC. I think the actual games
will be great, but what I am concerned about is life for the everyday
New Yorker. During the summer, NYC hosted the Republican Convention.
During this week, Madison Square Garden and the surrounding area, was
basically shut down. If the Olympics came, the whole city would
basically have to be shut down, which would severely effect a lot of
people. I guess the pros just out weigh the cons, in the end though.
Everyone can make their own decision in this issue, and until next week,
Tom
