SPORTS ARTICLES OF THE WEEK ARCHIVE:

MARCH 11, 2005

Hey!

In this week's article, I will continue my previous article, on the steroid scandal in MLB. In case you haven't heard, Congress has issued subpoenas to several big league players, including:

Jason Giambi
Curt Schilling
Frank Thomas
Jose Canseco
Mark McGwire
Rafael Palmiero
Sammy Sosa
Sandy Alderson
Kevin Towers

My first reaction to this, was not who was on the list, but who was missing. The one obvious player that was not issued a subpoena, is Barry Bonds. Most people find this amazing, but if you think about it, it does make sense. Although Bonds is the poster boy for steroids, if he were to come and testify, it would turn into a media circus, and nothing would get done. A lot of big names will attend, but certainly no one as big as Bonds will be coming. Most likely, not a lot will come out about these hearings, at least publicly, but I think the fact that the government is stepping in, is really sending a message to MLB, and Commissioner Bud Selig.

The other huge issue that a lot of people have with this, is: Should the government even be involved in this? Some people believe that the government should let it rest, as it is none of their business, and also part of the past. They think MLB should be worrying about the future, and cleaning up the sport, not focusing on the wrongs of the past. While I do agree with this, I still think these trials should take place. MLB is still not doing enough to stop steroid use, in my opinion, and these hearings will hopefully send a message to the executives, that this will absolutely not be tolerated any more. These hearings should be very interesting, and will definitely be a vocal point, in whether baseball continues to move forward in preventing steroids, or lingers in the past, worrying about retired stars who allegedly used steroids. I think it is really time to move on, but not until after these hearings. Enjoy Spring Training, and the rest of the week,

Tom
