SPORTS ARTICLES OF THE WEEK ARCHIVE:
MARCH 3, 2005
Hello,
In this week's Article of the Week, I have decided to make my official
picks for the 2005 Baseball season. Well, here it goes:
American League
East
Yankees
Red Sox
Orioles
Blue Jays
Devil Rays
Analysis: The Yankees will take the AL East once again, helped by the
additions of several players, including Randy Johnson, and Carl Pavano.
The Red Sox will really feel the loss of Pedro Martinez, but they will
still grab the wildcard. The Orioles made some pickups in the offseason,
including Sammy Sosa, but still won't overtake the Yankees or Red Sox.
The Blue Jays and Devil Rays will stay about the same as last year,
around the bottom of the pack.
Central
Twins
Indians
White Sox
Tigers
Royals
Analysis: This division is not great, but the Twins are the superior
team. The Indians may make things close, but I think ultimately they
will fall short. The White Sox, Tigers, and Royals will all have sub-par
seasons.
West
Angels
Mariners
Athletics
Rangers
Analysis: As in years past, I think this division could be very close.
When everything is said and done, I think the Angels will come out on
top, but not more than a few games ahead. The Mariners made some key
acquisitions, including Adrian Beltre, and should make a big rebound,
after last year's awful season. The Athletics lost Hudson, and that will
be very devastating lost this year. The Rangers really didn't improve at
all, so it looks like another long season for Texas fans.
National League
East
Braves
Phillies
Mets
Marlins
Nationals
Analysis: Every year, the Braves look like they're not going to win it,
but this year for a change, they look great. They added Tim Hudson, and
moved John Smoltz to the starting rotation. Things look very good for
the Braves to win the division once again. The Phillies will do better
this year, as they were right there with Larry Bowa, and should be able
to get over the hump this year. The Mets spent a lot of money in the
offseason, getting superstars Carlos Beltran and Pedro Martinez, but
they still have some major holes. If they are able to fill one or two of
these holes, and stay healthy, I could definitely see them as this
year's sleeper pick. The Marlins did not improve that much, but they
still lost Carl Pavano to the Yankees. Last, the Nationals will rebound
a little bit, with finally a home city that supports them, but the
talent simply is not there.
Central
Cardinals
Astros
Cubs
Brewers
Reds
Pirates
Analysis: The Cardinals should win this division easily. This division
is arguably the worst division in the league. I think the Astros will be
very streaky, but they will be out of it by late July. The Cubs finally
traded Sammy Sosa, but they never really found a replacement for him.
The Brewers have Ben Sheets, who should have an excellent year, but they
still lack the talent. The Reds and Pirates should have an interesting
battle at the bottom of the division: who can not lose the most games.
West
Dodgers
Giants
Diamondbacks
Padres
Rockies
Analysis: The Dodgers will win this division, with their pitching, and
addition of JD Drew. The Giant's clubhouse will be in dismay, with all
the Barry Bonds controversy, but they will still have a solid season,
and finish second. The Diamondbacks improved a ton in the off-season,
but still need a few more players before they are in contention. The
Padres will also improve a lot, but like the Diamondbacks, they also
need a few more players. The Rockies have done nothing in the
off-season, and should enjoy last place the entire season.
Playoff Predictions
Division Series
Yankees over Twins
Angels over Red Sox
Braves over Dodgers
Cardinals over Phillies
League Championship Series
Yankees over Angels
Braves over Cardinals
World Series
Yankees over Braves
Season Awards
AL MVP - Vlad Guerrero
NL MVP - Barry Bonds
AL CY Young - Randy Johnson
NL CY Young - John Smoltz
Manager of Year (AL) - Joe Torre
Manager of Year (NL) - Charlie Manuel
Rookie of Year (AL) - Jeremy Reed - Outfield - Mariners
Rookie of Year (NL) - Chris Burke - Second Base - Astros
Well, these are my picks for the 2005 Baseball season. An update to
these predictions should be available sometime in the summer, probably
near the All Star Game. I can't wait for the season to begin!
Bring on the baseball!
